Lesson #73 Absolute Maximum and Minimum

Quote of the Day:
"By the end of the first month of the 1995 session, each
senator will have made more money than any person who
works 40 hours a week at minimum wage for the entire
    year." -- Bill Clinton

Objectives:
The student will learn to solve for absolute extrema.

1. Draw pictures on the board and discuss the concept:

2. To find the absolute maximum and absolute minimum
   points:
     (A) First, determine the x-coordinates of the relative
maximum and minimum points (the critical points).
     (B) Then substitute the x-coordinates of the endpoints
and the x-coordinates of the critical points in
         the original function.
     (C) The largest y-value is the absolute maximum point
and the smallest y-value is the absolute minimum
         point.

3. Example:

4. Assignment:
      p. 307 (1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10)
