The object of this game is to be the first player to reach fifty.
On his turn, a player may add 1, 2, or 3 to the total.

After playing a few games with these rules, change the numbers that can be added to 1, 2, 3, or 4.

The Strategy:
The object is to be the first to get to 50.
If you are playing with the first set of rules (adding 1, 2, or 3 to the total), divide 50 by 4 (one more than the highest number) and note the remainder 2.
If you are going first, you should add 2.
Then on each succeeding turn, you had the amount to your opponent's number that would equal 4.
For example, if your opponent adds 2, you add 2.
if your opponent adds 1, you add 3.
if your opponent adds 3, you add 1.
This assures you of a win.

If you are playing with the second set of rules (adding 1, 2, 3, or 4 to the total), divide 50 by 5 (one more than the highest number) and note the remainder 0.
If you are going first, you can't win unless your opponent makes a mistake.
So, you would just pick any number, and see what your opponent adds.
Divide the remaining numbers (50 - current total) by 5, and see if you get a remainder.   If you do, add that number.   Then on each succeeding turn, you had the amount to your opponent's number that would equal 5.
For example, if your opponent adds 2, you add 3.
if your opponent adds 1, you add 4. etc.
This assures you of a win.
