The Annual V.C.T.M. - V.C.U. Mathematics Contest was
given on the campuses of the local Community Colleges
from 1978 until 1990. It was a two hour contest
consisting of short answer questions of four levels of
difficulty. The contest was open to all students
enrolled in courses above Algebra I, and all students took
the same test.
To allow students with a similar background in
mathematics to compete only with one another, the
competition was divided into five levels as follows:
Level A Students enrolled in Geometry
Level B Students enrolled in Algebra II
Level C Students enrolled in Trigonometry or Precalculus
Level D Students enrolled in Math Analysis
Level E Students enrolled in Calculus or above
Competition at the state level was further based on
the Virginia High School League classifications of A, AA,
and AAA, and among private schools. Certificates were
awarded to the top ten students in the state at each of
the different levels.
Local competition of each testing center was also
part of the contest. Handley students took their test at
Lord Fairfax Community College and competed against the
schools in Warren, Frederick, Clarke, Shenandoah, and
Rappahannock counties.
Certificates were awarded those who place in the top
twenty percent of participants in the levels of
competition in each region.
