Lesson #4
Functions / Domain

Quote of the Day:
"Old math teachers never die -- they just lose their functions."

Objectives:

The student will learn the definition of a function and be able to identify functions and relations.

The student will be able to use functional notation and compute the values of composite functions.

The student will be able to determine domain and range of a given function.

1. Collect Homework Assignment.

2. Learning Calculus

3. Functions / Domain and Range
Concept
(1) If you drop a water balloon on your calculus teacher's head, the distance that the balloon travels is a function of time.

(2) The number of games that the San Antonio Spurs win is a function of how well Tim Duncan does.

(3) The ASCII codes represent a function: For every integer from 0 to 255, there exists a unique character assigned to it.
    32 --> space
    65 --> 'A'
    67 --> 'C'

Definition of a function:
A function is a set of ordered pairs (x, y) such that to each value of x, there corresponds a unique value of y.

The set of x-coordinates (independent variable) is called the domain.

The set of y-coordinates (dependent variable) is called the range.
