Class, Take Your Seats #4

Grade Level: 11 - 12

Materials: One set of worksheets for each student

Objective: The student will be able to solve problems involving tangent and normal lines to a curve.

Discussion: The student must first solve the nineteen problems involving tangents and normals to get either the equation of a line or a single point.

If the answer for Saccheri were the line y = x + 1, then the student would put the five ordered pairs, (-2, -1),
(-1, 0), (0, 1), (1, 2), and (2, 3) in the boxes of the Clue Worksheet.   By each name, there is an appropriate number of empty spaces (from one to five) depending on the number of ordered pairs that lie on the normal or tangent line.   The student should also place a small letter in each of the boxes of the seating chart as pictured below.

This will facilitate the solving of the puzzle.   The goal is to locate the one seat for each of the nineteen students.
