Handley Sandwich Problem

Handley seniors Thad and Amanda are eating lunch when they are joined by Mike.

Amanda has 5 sandwiches, Thad has 3 sandwiches, and Mike has none.

They all share equally in the meal.

If Mike pays $4.00 for what he ate, how should the money be divided between Amanda and Thad?

Solution to the Problem:

Amanda should receive $3.50 and Thad $.50.

Each person eats 2 2/3 sandwiches.

Amanda contributes 2 1/3 sandwiches (or 7/3).

Thad contributes 1/3 of a sandwich.

Therefore Amanda gives 7 times as much as Thad, and should be paid in that ratio.
