Materials needed: An 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of notebook paper or a 3 x 5 card, sissors
Discussion: Ask your students if they believe that you will be able to cut a hole in the
piece of paper (or notecard), so that you can walk through it.
The Trick: With sharp sissors, cut the paper (or notecard) according to the following pattern.
The smaller the distance between the cut lines, the larger the ring will be.
To facilitate the cutting, I fold the piece of paper in half.
Then I cut every other line starting on the fold side and alternating fold side and open side
and ending on the fold side. The number of vertical cuts can vary, but I usually make about 15 cuts.
Then cut the middle line (the fold) but only cut it between the first and last cut lines
on the fold -- don't cut all the way to the edge! See diagram below:
