Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

The Carlsbad Caverns form one of the world's oldest cave systems.   The caverns were discovered in 1900 and still have not been completely explored.   The temperature of the caves remains constant at 56°F.   Seven miles of trail are electrically lighted.

The Big Room, 754 ft below the surface, is the most majestic of the many chambers and can be explored as a self-guided tour.   The trail through the Big Room is one mile long and takes about 1.5 hours.   This circular route passes many large and famous features, including Bottomless Pit, Giant Dome, Rock of Ages, and painted Grotto.

Gram and Pops visited here in May 2012.
