Castillo de San Marcos National Monument

The Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is located in St. Augustine. It was built in 1672-1695, and served primarily as an outpost of the Spanish Empire, guarding St. Augustine, the first permanent European settlement in the continental United States, and also protecting the sea route for treasure ships returning to Spain.   The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest European fort built of stone blocks in the United States.

Gram and Pops visited here in August 1992 and Gram came back in June 2003.
