Devils Tower National Monument

Devils Tower National Monument

Devils Tower National Monument is America's First National Monument, proclaimed by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.   Devils Tower rises 1267 feet above the Belle Fourche River.   There are several hiking trails that encircle the tower.   We hiked the 1.3 mile Tower Trail, which affords great close-up views of the tower.

Devils Tower is also known as Bears Lodge, and it is a sacred site for many American Indians.   You will see prayer cloths placed by members of American Indian tribes as part of their religious practices.   You will also see climbers scaling the walls of Devils Tower.   Near the entrance to the monument, you will see prairie dogs in their town.

Gram and Pops visited here in September 2010.
