Fort Laramie played a crucial role in the transformation of the west, first as a fur-trading post and then as a military fort.   It was a landmark and a way station for trappers, traders, missionaries, emigrants, Pony Express riders, and miners who were making their way west.   Fort Laramie was a collection of military buildings near the Laramie and the Platte Rivers.   Because the Indian threat at that time was low, Fort Laramie was built without walls.
